A tough opening night draw on a tough side of the bracket tells the story for the Del Oro High boys basketball team as the Golden Eagles head Wednesday night into the first round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II playoffs.

Del Oro, 18-9 overall on the season and 6-4 in Sierra Foothill League play, most likely needed one more league win to finish in the top eight of the Div. II Power Ratings and earn a first round home game.

But after knocking off SFL leaders Granite Bay and Rocklin, the Golden Eagles suffered a tough setback to Roseville before finishing strong with a 66-52 win at Nevada Union and a home verdict over Woodcreek last Tuesday, 56-48.

Del Oro ended up with the No. 9 seed in Div. II and on Wednesday will play at No. 8 Del Campo (19-8). The Golden Eagles defeated the Cougars, 19-8, 76-70 in overtime back on January 4 in a non-league game.

Del Oro coach Geoff Broyles was hoping to get the services back of starting point guard Danny Becker who missed the last two games after suffering a concussion against Roseville.

If Del Oro can get past Del Campo in the opening round, the Golden Eagles would then play the survivor of another Wednesday game between Will C. Wood and top-seed Sacramento High. That game will be played Friday night at 7 p.m. at the home of the higher remaining seed. Will C. Wood defeated River City in an "out-bracket" game last Friday.

The semi-finals for boys Div. II teams are slated on Wed. Feb. 27 at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento with the finals following on Sat. March 2 at 4:30 p.m.

In last week’s over Woodcreek, Del Oro landed four players in dougle digit scoring as Collin Mitchell pumped in 16 points, Conner Drake added 12 and Keenan Finney and Aaron Freeman scored 10 each.

Mitchell also had a big game against Nevada Union as the senior guard poured in 22 points. Ryan Takayama followed with 15 while Trevor Pistochini chipped in with 11.
