Playing without two of its top players, the Del Oro boys basketball team more than acquitted itself at last week’s National Prep Classic tournament played in Santa Maria. Matched against some of the top teams from across the state, the Golden Eagles went 1-2 against quality competition, while using a line-up that was missing scoring leaders Jordan Broyles and Taylor Bergthold and was also just getting back the services of several Del Oro football players. Del Oro opened play with a 51-44 setback to perennial state Div. I power Westchester, of Los Angeles. The Golden Eagles trailed by just one point at halftime, but were hurt by a five minute scoring dry spell in the third quarter. Rex Hime led Del Oro in the game with 14 points. In the second round, the Golden Eagles were then matched with state Div. IV power St. Bernard, of Playa del Rey, and once again, a cold shooting stretch over the middle two quarters led to a 69-42 defeat. Del Oro trailed just 19-15 after a quarter, but was outscored by the Los Angeles-area team 32-16 in the second and third stanzas. Nick Lewis’ 13 points led Del Oro. Austin Soldano and Kyle Setterlund followed with eight and six points, respectively. Del Oro salvaged its final game of the tourney as junior Trevor Pistochini came up with a season high 16 points to highlight a 58-42 win over another Los Angeles area squad – Hawthorne. Del Oro jumped out to a 19-8 lead after a quarter of action and then extended the margin to 32-19 by halftime. Lewis followed in the scoring column with 10 points, while Alan Kidwell added nine and Soldano scored six. Setterlund, and Daniel Becker each added five points. Del Oro was slated to play Hoover, of Fresno, last night to open the Whitney Tournament, which runs through Friday. ~
