Golden Eagle athletics ready to roll

Don’t look now but the fall athletic teams at Del Oro High School are getting their respective seasons underway this week with most squads except football being off and running after next week’s Labor Day holiday. Here’s a sport-by-sport breakdown on what how the Del Oro teams look like this season. Girls Volleyball — The Lady Eagles will be coached again by longtime mentor Stuart Kageta, while the JV coach is Jamie Mathais. The frosh co-coaches are Ardella Koester and Robin Gray. The teams have had a couple of early scrimmages but their first official match is next Tuesday (Sept. 2) at Oak Ridge. This season the girls teams will be playing a Monday-Wednesday rotation in Sierra Foothill League play. In most SFL matches, the freshman and JV teams will play at 5 p.m in different gyms followed by the varsity matches at approximately 6:30 p.m. Girls Tennis — Jill Tooker’s Lady Eagle netters begin their season today with a 3:30 p.m. match at Oak Ridge. After playing at Loretto next Thursday, Sept. 4, Del Oro opens its Sierra Foothill League campaign at rival Granite Bay on Tuesday, Sept. 9. The tennis team will be in a Tuesday-Thursday rotation for SFL matches this season. Boys Soccer — After playing on a Monday-Wednesday rotation for the past two years, the Sierra Foothill League returns to a Tuesday-Thursday format. The Golden Eagles, coached by Dave Shiro, open their official season next Wednesday at Bella Vista. The SFL opener will be at Granite Bay on Sept. 16. Paul O’Brien will coach Del Oro’s JVs. Cross Country — Del Oro’s boys and girls cross country teams will be coached by Kevin Ostenberg. The team’s first big invitational is set for Friday, Sept. 5, at Rocklin. The team will also vie in several invitational runs this season at Nevada Union, Oak Ridge, Westmoor in Daly City, Stanford, Castro Valley, Bella Vista and Mt. Sac in Walnut. Sierra Foothill League meets are set for Sept. 17 at Springview Park in Rocklin and Oct. 8 at Nevada Union in Grass Valley. The SFL championship meet will be run at William Jessup in Rocklin on Oct. 31. Girls Golf — Hal Stein-back will coach the Del Oro girls golf team, with the Lady Eagles playing their SFL matches on Tuesday and Thursday. Home competition will be at Sunset Whitney Country Club in Rocklin. The Lady Eagles host El Camino next Wednesday in a non-league match at 3:30 p.m., also at Sunset Whitney. Water Polo — The Del Oro boys and girls water polo squads open their season next Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Christian Brothers. The team then begins SFL matches when they play at Granite Bay on Sept. 9. The teams will also vie in several tournaments including two at Sierra College – the boys on Sept. 5-6 and the girls on Sept. 19-20. Del Oro’s water polo coaches include varsity girls, Linda Callahan; varsity boys, Stuart Ryland; JV girls, Randy Trefry; JV boys, Brandon Thomson. Football — While Casey Taylor’s varsity Golden Eagles kick off their season on Saturday, Sept. 13, in Pocatello, Idaho against Lake City of Coeur d’Alene, the Eagle frosh and JV teams will open on Thursday, Sept. 11, in a doubleheader against Colfax in Eagle Stadium. The frosh game will kickoff at 5:30 p.m., followed by the JV game at 7:30 p.m. Keith Powers is the head frosh coach while Jerry Van Lengen is the head JV coach.
