So much for the move of Del Oro’s water polo program from Div. II up to Div. I.
In their inaugural foray into the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section’s Div. I playoff tournament, the Del Oro girls and boys water polo squads more than acquitted themselves in opening round matches played last weekend in Modesto.
Del Oro’s girls team, the defending Div. II champions, showed their brand of water polo in the Sierra Foothill League is pretty good, as they took down Buhach Colony, of Atwater, 12-5.
The win advanced Del Oro into a Tuesday second-round match against St. Mary’s, of Stockton. The semi-final rounds are set for Thursday, with the finals Saturday at Woodcreek High in Roseville.
In their first round match on Friday, the boys team played a strong match before finally bowing to Merced, 14-10. The Golden Eagles, who had lost to the same Merced team, 15-2, in a tournament last month, had the Bears on the ropes trailing just 9-7 going into the final period.
Del Oro was sparked on offense in the upset bid by Keenan Finney, who tallied five goals, and Thor Kamphefner with three scores.
