After a tough semi-final overtime loss, Del Oro girls basketball team center Stephanie Geyer made sure that the Lady Eagles weren’t going to leave their own invitational tournament empty-handed last weekend. Playing Sierra Foothill League rival Woodcreek in the third place game of the Lady Eagle Invitational last Saturday, Geyer dominated play in the post to lead her team to a hard fought 52-42 win. Geyer, a junior, scored 26 points and snared 17 rebounds to help pace the victory. On the evening, Geyer connected 11 of 16 field-goal attempts and was a perfect 4x4 from the foul line. Also aiding the Del Oro win was Brianna Ruiz with eight points and Mia Maglinte with seven. In the semi-finals, Del Oro and North Section power Pleasant Valley, of Chico, locked up in a heated affair that the Vikings took, 67-57, in overtime. Tied at 53-53 at the end of regulation, Del Oro was out-pointed in the extra session by a 14-4 count. Del Oro was led on offense by Ruiz with 21 markers and Geyer who followed with 12. Cecelia Campbell, Paige McKim and Maglinte all scored four points each for DO. The Lady Eagles had opened the tournament with a 45-38 decision over Casa Roble on Thursday as Maglinte netted 14 points. Geyer also had a good all-around game with eight points and 12 rebounds. Ruiz chipped in with seven. Del Oro is now idle until next week’s West Coast Jamboree that features over 60 teams and is played at several sites in the Bay Area. The Lady Eagles are bracketed in the Emerald Division and will play at Miramonte High School in Orinda. Del Oro will play its first game on Wednesday, Dec. 28, against Casa Grande, of Petaluma. Other teams comprising the Emerald Division include American of Fremont, St. Francis of Mountain View, Bradshaw Christian, Christian Brothers, Moreau of Hayward and Miramonte. ~ Staff report
