This past weekend the Del Oro boys wrestling team braved the elements and traveled to the Reno Livestock Event Center for the 37th annual Sierra Nevada Classic.
After Day 1, the Golden Eagles had qualified six wrestlers to the next day’s competition and were holding the lead at the 81-team tournament.
By the end of Day 2, the team settled for eighth place. Del Oro was led by 106-pound junior Isaac Blackburn, who finished third, and 145-pounder Johnny Zieour, who finished sixth. Also placing seventh for Del Oro was 182-pound junior Dylan Kainrath.
Neither sleet nor snow was enough to deter the Golden Eagles. Senior captain Zieour loved his team's determination.
“This week the team picked it up a notch,” he said. “I hope we can carry this intensity into league.”
Next week the Sierra Foothill League starts competition on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at Del Oro where the Eagles will face rival Rocklin High with the JV starting at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.
Coach Clint Madden from Del Oro believes that the Eagles are prepared for a grueling league schedule. “This group of wrestlers has put in a ton of work during the off season,” he said, “and it is starting to pay off.”
