A pair of strong performances at the recent U.S. Junior Olympic Gymnastics Regional competition in Phoenix, Ariz., has vaulted two Del Oro High female gymnasts to next week’s Junior Olympics National Meet slated for Minneapolis, Minn.

Both Shani Remme, a sophomore at Del Oro, and Alex Esmerian, a junior at Del Oro, qualified for the nationals with high scores, but for different clubs.

Remme, who began her gymnastics career at age 10, competes for the Byers Gymnastic Center, in Roseville, while Esmerian competes for Technique Gymnastics, in Rancho Cordova.

Both gymnasts train between 20 and 30 hours a week, which can be a chore shuffling training, school work and rest.

“It’s pretty exciting to be going,” said Alex. “It’s a lot of work, but it is rewarding.”

Alex, whose favorite event is the beam, has been with the Technique Gymnastics Club for two years after starting with Miyaga’s, in Auburn.

Shanni, whose favorite event is the floor exercise, had a solid showing at the regionals, where she placed third on the bars, fourth in floor and fifth all-around. Earlier, at the Northern California State Championships, she was both the bar and floor champion, took home medals in the vault and beam competitions and placed third all-around.

Shanni’s goal is to compete in gymnastics at a Div. I school in college.

Alex also had a top-flight effort at regionals.

Her best event is beam and at the regional meet she took first place in this event with a 9.6. Her other scores were vault, 9.3, bars, 8.950, floor, 9.525. Alex’s all-around score of 37.375 was good for sixth place.

Stockwell to NIT

Another Del Oro student, Ann Stockwell, a junior, also competed at the 2013 Level-10 Region 1 championships in Phoenix. Competing for Miyagi’s of Auburn, Ann earned 9.425 on vault, 9.175 on bars, 9.150 on beam, and 9.325 on floor.  Her all-around score was 37.075 and she tied for 9th place out of 32 contestants in her age group.

This performance qualified her as an alternate to represent Region 1 at the 2013 Junior
Olympics National Championships. It also qualified her to compete at the Junior Olympics
National Invitational Tournament.

Extreme Gymnastics qualifies pair

Two Level 10 gymnasts qualified for the boys nationals slated for this week in Portland, Oregon. Carl Meader, a junior from Del Oro, and Justin Rowen, a senior at Whitney High in Roseville, both belong to the Extreme Gymnastics Club in Loomis.

The boys represented Northern California on the All Star team when they competed in the Region 1 competition last month. Both boys qualified to compete at the Junior Olympic Championships in all six men’s events - floor, pommel horse, vault, rings, parallel bars and high bar.
