His classmates, teammates, coach and friends at Foresthill High School have not forgotten Pliny Oscar Murphy IV. The 20-year-old died July 25, 2010 after jumping off rocks into the water at Camp Far West Lake in Sheridan. On Jan. 26, Murphy’s family was presented with his framed jersey prior to the Wildfires’ first home varsity basketball game when the team hosted the Saints of Cristo Rey High School of Sacramento. Murphy is a 2009 Foresthill High graduate, and his family now lives in Penryn. The Wildfires’ home bleachers were packed by those paying honor to Murphy for his inspiration to so many and for being an outstanding role model. During the evening, Murphy was remembered as a “wonderful young, smart, energetic, unselfish and God-fearing individual,” according to Oscar David, his basketball coach. “Pliny gave more than most people realized. He was the best and is still considered one of the finest that has played at Foresthill High,” David said. He also said Murphy and his family will always be remembered for the love and commitment given to the Foresthill community.
