The Del Oro Golden Eagles wrestling program will be well represented at this weekend’s CIF State Meet slated for Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. Thanks to some stellar efforts at last week’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet in Stockton, Del Oro will send a contingent of five grapplers to the CIF state event which is set for Friday and Saturday. Del Oro mustered 110 points in the Master’s meet to finish seventh as a team. Vacaville ran away with the team title by scoring 190 points. Among Div. II squads, Oak Ridge was fifth with 113 points while Ponderosa was ninth with 82 1-2. Two Del Oro wrestlers – Connor Morgan and Corey Johnson – grabbed respective second-place finishes in the 130- and 135-pound weight classes. Meanwhile, senior Bobby Gallagher used a first-round pin of Armijo of Fairfield’s Andrew Fuimaono to grab a seventh place and secure the final berth to the state tournament in his weight class. Also qualifying was Jesse Stafford, who is making his second trip to the state meet after finishing in fourth place in the 145-pound weight class. Casey Schumacher, a senior, also qualified for this week’s CIF event. He forfeited his final match at 152, but only after locking up sixth place to earn a trip to state. Another Del Oro wrestler, sophomore Kevin Burrage, missed out on a state berth after falling in the seventh place match at 152.
