When a baseball team has won 13 of its last 15 games, it has to be doing something right. That’s why Del Oro High coach Brett Lachemann doesn’t want his players to mess with a winning formula in tonight’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship game against Ponderosa. “They don’t need to do anything different,” Lachemann said. “All they need to do is what they’ve been doing, which is throw strikes, play defense and put the ball in play. They don’t need to try elevate their game.” Senior right-hander Cole Saunders (5-2) will take the mound for the Golden Eagles (17-13) in tonight’s 6 p.m. contest. Pitching for Ponderosa (23-8) will likely be either junior left-hander Matt Evanoff (7-3, 2.26 ERA, 64 strikeouts in 59 1/3 innings) or senior righty Travis Bravo (5-1, 2.92 ERA, 51 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings). Several seniors have swung the bat well lately for Del Oro, including second baseman Jake Bews, shortstop Kenny Zuvela (who hit a grand slam in last Thursday’s 11-1 victory over McClatchy) and left fielder Matt Leak. Junior right fielder Ben Consulo has also contributed at the plate. Lachemann said reaching the section title game for the first time since 1991 has been “a fun ride.” “Our kids have done a great job getting their season turned around,” the coach said. “Even when we struggled, their attitudes were good and they kept playing hard. They deserve everything that’s been coming to them.”
