The Del Oro High wrestling team surfed its way to second place at the prestigious Coast Classic in Santa Cruz on Saturday. Led by four individual champions, the Golden Eagles finished just 10 points behind Madera at the tournament that featured many of Northern California's top programs. Connor Morgan was a champion at 112, Jeremy Stubbs took first place with a 2-1 win in the 125-pound final and Russell Bettencourt repeated as champion at 145 with a 5-4 win in the championship match. Del Oro senior Joe Stafford won by pin in the final and was named the most outstanding wrestler in the upper weights. Cody Billings went 6-1 in the tournament to take third place at 103. Cory Johnson was 5-1 in the 119 weight class to take third while Brandon Johnson was also third at 135. Todd Ryland had three pins in the tournament and took fourth. Placer senior Nico Alicia had a solid 3-2 record in the heavyweight division. Junior Chris Cox lost to Brandon Johnson at 135 and made the consolation semifinals for the Hillmen.
