Del Oro High waited 17 years to win its second Sac-Joaquin Section boys tennis championship. The last few minutes Tuesday afternoon in Loomis were the most agonizing. The Golden Eagles stunned Sierra Foothill League rival Granite Bay 5-4. Freshman Paul Villa and sophomore Brandt Steinmetz clinched the team win with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. “The Rio (Americano) win Monday was a nice surprise, but this today was all heart,” Del Oro coach Jen Isaac said. “We had guys diving on the court. They were all cheering for each other. It was pretty spectacular.” Granite Bay played much of the season without No. 1 singles player Max Voigt, but he was there Tuesday to lead a loaded Grizzlies lineup. He topped Del Oro freshman Brett Bacharach at No. 1 singles, but the Eagles countered with three big wins of their own in singles player. Andrew Milton stormed back for a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3. Brandon Bailey took his No. 4 match 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and Spencer Klein pulled out a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (3) win at No. 5. Taylor Carrington and Nick Koop won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles to set up the dramatic final match. Del Oro earned a berth into Friday’s NorCal Division II Championships in Oakley.
