In one of their most impressive defensive outings this season, the Del Oro boys basketball team clamped down on the Rocklin Thunder in last Thursday night’s Sierra Foothill League opener played in front of the home crowd in the Golden Eagles’ gym. After giving up some easy early baskets down low to the Thunder in the opening stanza, the hosts tightened things up and allowed the visitors just 28 points over the last three quarters. “We probably came out a little over-aggressive,” said Del Oro coach Geoff Broyles. “We were trying to deny on the outside and that probably opened up some things underneath. We were able to adjust, though.” While Del Oro struggled a bit on the defensive end to open the game, the Black and Gold also had problems solving Rocklin’s zone defense, and after a quarter led just, 13-8. After the Golden Eagles stepped up its defense in the second quarter, the game-flow started to change as Del Oro followed Austin Soldano’s 10-point spree to ignite a 23-8 points exchange in favor of the hosts. The rally was capped off when Del Oro’s Taylor Bergthold drilled a three-point basket that beat the halftime buzzer and vaulted the Golden Eagles into a big 36-16 advantage at the break. From there, the Golden Eagles put things on cruise control the rest of the way as they outscored the Thunder, 22-10, in the third period to extend their margin to 58-26 and ice the victory. Soldano, Bergthold and Nick Lewis all sank 12 points each to lead the way for the Golden Eagles. Following in the scoring column were Kyle Setterlund and Trevor Pistochini with eight points apiece, Alan Kidwell and Danny Becker with six apiece, Taylor Butterfield and Jordan Broyles with four points each, Rex Hime with three and Blake Covey with two. In other opening night SFL boys action, Roseville showed that it’s a team that can’t be counted out of the league race by posting a 67-56 win over Nevada Union. The Tigers used a steady 1-2-3 punch on offense with Latrelle Swayne scoring 17 points, Marcus Garcia adding 15 and Andrew Schmidt scoring 12. In the other SFL game played last Thursday, Granite Bay outlasted Woodcreek, 77-70. Senior guard Nathan Brillington sparked the win for the Grizzlies by netting 34 points. Del Oro was slated to resume its SFL slate on Tuesday with a game at Woodcreek. Tonight, Jan. 19, the Golden Eagles are at home versus Nevada Union. Next Tuesday, Jan. 24, Del Oro will host Roseville. SFL game times are 4, 5:30 and 7 p.m. for frosh, JV and varsity tripleheaders. ~ Staff report
