Eagles’ golf team sneaks into CIF Masters

-A +A
By the narrowest of margins, Del Oro High School’s golf season is still alive. Playing in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II tournament Monday at Haggin Oaks, the Golden Eagles were off their top play recently, but still finished in third place to squeeze into next Monday’s CIF Masters Tournament. Sierra Foothill League rival Granite Bay shot a 379 over the par-72 layout to take first place honors. The Grizzlies were followed in by Christian Brothers at 382. The Golden Eagles were further back at 398 but they were able to finish one stroke ahead of Oakmont’s 399 tally to advance to next week’s final. Rounding out the top six in the team scorers were McClatchy with a 413 and Kennedy at 445. Del Oro’s Austin Smotherman tied for medalist honors with Woodcreek’s Steve Gearhart, each shooting one under par 71s. Eric Ash was next for Del Oro with a 76. The Golden Eagles will now vie with all of the Sac-Joaquin Section qualifiers on Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park near Stockton. The top teams and individuals from the section meet will then move to the Nor Cal Regional, set for May 23 at Butte Creek in Chico. ~ Staff report
