Foster Fretland

Junior Foster Fretland had a breakout season with the Del Oro High wrestling team. Fretland, a 145-pounder, placed seventh at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament last month, earning a trip to the CIF State Wrestling Championships last weekend in Bakersfield. “Both my matches were tough, but it’s good to get out there because the first time you go to a big tournament you always have jitters, but the second time it’s not so bad because you’ve already experienced it,” he said. Fretland was one of the team leaders in escapes all winter. What I like most about high school: “I like the atmosphere the best. I’ve been in other school districts and sometimes you’re on edge because not everyone gets along. At Del Oro, everyone knows everyone and everyone gets along with everyone.” What I like least about high school: “I really don’t have a least favorite. High school is great.” Favorite food: “Italian.” If I could set any record in any sport: “I’d bowl a perfect game.” Item I’d take with me on “Survivor”: “A toothbrush.” Dream job: “Get paid to travel around the world.” Favorite smell: “A home-cooked meal.” Prematch ritual: “I have a playlist on my iPod that I listen to before every match.” Person who I admire most: “My brother. Anything that he wants to do and anything that interests him he goes out and goes full force at it, and I really admire that.” What part of my match is strongest: “My best thing is takedowns.” What part of my match needs the most work: “I need to improve my confidence in myself.” Favorite school subject: “History, because it’s something that had a lot of ifs, ands and buts. It’s open to debate.” What’s on my iPod: “I’ve got a mix of really everything – rap, country, techno, pretty much everything .” Best advice I’ve received: “I get it a lot after I lose or I’m not doing well in something. Put it behind you, but don’t forget it.” Dream car: “Dodge Challenger.”
