The Del Oro High junior is one of the track team’s strongest middle-distance runners this spring. She’s qualified for the 800-meter run and mile run this week at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet at Sacramento City College. “She’s just a fantastic athlete,” head coach Jake Hardey said. Devitt-Payne hopes to continue her running career after graduating high school next June. “I would love to run in college,” she said. “The biggest goal for me is I just want to keep improving my times this week and next year. I just want to beat my times.” What I like most about high school: ”Oh, everything! I like the school spirit and all the people and the sports, of course. Getting really involved.” What I like least about high school: “All the homework. The workload is pretty tough.” Favorite food: “Thanksgiving dinner. The turkey, the mashed potatoes – all that good stuff.” If I could set any record in any sport: “I’d like to set a pole vault record. I think that’d be really cool because I think they’re crazy jumping up there.” Dream job: “Skydiving instructor, like the person who jumps out with them.” Premeet ritual: “My friend and I call them ‘jumpy-jumpies.’ We jump up and down a lot in place.” What part of my race is strongest: “I like the end because it’s the most exciting. I’m a strong finisher.” What part of my race needs the most work: “The beginning could use a little work because I don’t always start off really fast. I’m not really aggressive so people kind of push me around and I have to make up ground.” Favorite school subject: “English, because I like reading a lot.” Least favorite household chore: “All of them. Sometimes my mom makes me clean the toilet. That’s not fun.” What’s on my iPod: “Rascal Flatts and anything fun to dance to.” Favorite athlete: “Jordan Hassay.” Favorite vacation spot: “Disneyland.” Favorite hobby: “I like scrapbooking.” Dream car: “Any convertible.” Biggest talent outside of sports: “I play the flute.”
