Sierra College?s women?s softball team captured the Big 8 Conference championship this past season and won a regional and super regional tournament to advance to the recent California State JC Final Four tournament in Bakersfield. Helping the Sierra College run this season was 2010 Del Oro High graduate Annette Merjano, who played both catcher and infield for the Wolverines. Merjano was one of six Sierra softball players that signed recently to go on and play at four-year colleges. Merjano, who blasted 15 home runs this season for Sierra?s team that finished 41-8, will play next season at Concordia University, in Irvine. ?I?m really excited about signing,? Merjano said. ?It?s exciting to see that I was able to go somewhere with my skills.? Merjano, who was named to the all-state and All-American teams, led the team in hits (72) and doubles (20) and was second in home runs (15) and RBIs (59). She is the Wolverine?s starting catcher, but with two catchers already on the roster at Concordia it?s likely she will shift positions. ?She?s just really interested in my bat,? said Merjano, of Concordia coach Crystal Rosenthal. ?I?ll most definitely be batting, but fielding wise I?m not sure, but I feel very versatile, I can play anywhere.?
