The Del Oro girls basketball team has some new faces in its lineup, but the Lady Eagles showed last weekend they still know how to win the championship of the Sonora Kiwanis basketball tournament. Del Oro made the long trek to the Gold Country fruitful as the Lady Eagles rallied in last Saturday’s championship game at Sonora to defeat Bear River, 50-38. The title marked the sixth consecutive season that Del Oro has captured the tournament. Now 3-0 on the season, Del Oro opened the tournament by defeating Lodi, 67-31, on Thursday, before breaking open a close game in the second half of the semi-finals for a 58-33 win over Brett Harte. Brianna Ruiz lead the win over Brett Harte by tallying 23 points and Stephanie Geyer added 13. Del Oro led just 25-19 at the end of the first half before breaking open the game with a 16-4 third-quarter point exchange. In the title game against Bear River, the Lady Eagles fell behind 15-7 after a quarter, but rallied to trail just 23-19 at the half. In the second half, Del Oro used its pressure defense to turn the tide as the Lady Eagles went on an 18-5 tear in the third quarter. Geyer had a big championship game with 23 markers, while Ruiz added 15,and Lauren Heyn chipped in with four. Del Oro is slated to play at Kennedy next Tuesday in non-league play before opening action in its own tournament on Thursday, Dec. 15 against Casa Roble. ~ Staff report
