Collin Mitchell poured in a season-high 19 points last Tuesday to help spark the Del Oro boys basketball team past Whitney, 64-44.
Playing on their home court, the Golden Eagles improved to 8-2 on the season by using the middle two quarters to pull away from the Wildcats from Rocklin.
In a low-scoring first quarter, Del Oro led the visitors just 5-4 before starting to find the range in the second quarter when they outscored the Rocklin cagers, 20-11, to take a 25-15 halftime advantage.
With Mitchell, Keenan Finney and Danny Becker leading the charge, Del Oro had another strong quarter in the third when a 22-12 exchange pushed the Golden Eagles into a 47-27 advantage heading into the final eight minutes.
Following Mitchell in the scoring column for the Golden Eagles were Finney with 14, Becker with 10, Brandon Lopez chipped in with six, Trevor Pistochini with five and Jack Huizenga with four.
Rounding out Del Oro’s scorers were Michael Moore with three, Conner Drake with two and Mason Curry with one.
Del Oro opens play today in the Whitney Christmas Classic. The Golden Eagles opening round game will be against Center at 4:30 p.m.
