DO athletes offer 2011-12 memorable moments

Athletics at Del Oro High in 2011-12 had more than of its share of ?moments to remember.? From section championship teams to league championships to state level recognition, this year, coming up with winners in the school?s 2012 GESPYS awards took some thought and was no easy task. The GESPYS event at Del Oro is a fundraiser for the Steffen Ohland Memorial Scholarship award, which this year was received by senior Alex Mason. After all the voting was in ? from students, athletes, coaches and fans ? without any further adieu, here are your Golden Eagle Sports Performers of the Year. 2011-12 GESPYS Play of the Year: Brandon Monroe, 80-yard interception for touchdown Record Breaking Performance: Kelsey Malone, Becca Triplett, Alyssa Penney and Hannah Jarvis Girls Swimming, Medley relay team record breaker Halftime Performer of the Year: Jared Capper Moment to Remember: State Bowl Game Rally Crowd Freshman Athletes of the Year: Zach Ruybal, Lida Landre Sophomore Athletes of the Year: Kyle Setterlund, Libby Runte Junior Athletes of the Year: Chase Van Liew, Katelynn Thompson, Stephanie Geyer Senior Athletes of the Year: Jordan Courage, Blake Covey, Sam Baker Breakthrough Athlete of the Year: Amanda Weddle Coach of the Year: Dave Sanchez/Clint Madden, wrestling Teams of the Year: Varsity Football, Girls Soccer Male Sports Performer of the Year: Bret Bacharach Female Sports Performer of the Year: Courtney Weddle Steffen Ohland Memorial Scholarship: Alex Mason Black & Gold Still Has Openings The 17th annual Del Oro Black and Gold Scholarship Golf Tournament still has some openings for foursomes. The tournament is scheduled for Friday, June 15, at Turkey Creek Golf Club, in Lincoln. The tournament is played annually to help raise scholarship funds for the Paul?s Place Association Scholarships and the Duane Perkins Memorial Scholarship. The tournament will be played under a four-player scramble format with a shotgun start set for 1:30 p.m. Several tournament packages are available including the Black & Gold Package ($110) and the Golden Eagle Package ($130). In addition tournament sponsorships are also available ranging in price from $250 to $2500. The tournament entry fee includes golf, golf cart, range balls and buffet dinner. In addition several side games including long drive, closest-to-the-hole, raffle tickets, mulligan packages and $500 designated hole-in-one prizes will be available.
