The Del Oro wrestling team showed up in a big way at last weekend’s two-day, Nor-Cal Championship Tournament, hosted at Anderson High near Redding. Del Oro entered two varsity teams and advanced 14 wrestlers to the second day of competition. DO’s first team finished in third place out of 49 teams. Top showings for the Golden Eagles included at 152 lbs where Austin Branum lost a thrilling finals match to the nationally ranked Joey Lavelle, from Reno, 3-1. Branum had to avenge an earlier loss at the Sierra Nevada Classic to nationally ranked Drew Smith, of Dimonte Ranch, in the semi finals, 4-3, to reach that match. At 113 lbs, freshman Zach Ryubal was outstanding, only narrowly missing a finals bid — and finished 3rd. Meanwhile, hard working junior Patrick Neu grinded out a 4th-place finish at 145 lbs. Other place grabbers included 170 lb. sophomore Dylan Kainrath (6th); 132 lb. freshman Tanner Robison (6th); 106 lb. freshman Janson Engelbrecht (6th); 138 lb. Junior Brandon Montoya (6th); 106 lb Isaac Blackburn (7th); heavyweight freshman Saul Menesis (7th); and 132 lb. junior Johnny Zieour (8th). Del Oro takes on Nevada Union in a duel meet at Del Oro this Wednesday evening (JV at 6 p.m., V at 7 p.m.). ~ Staff report
