Del Oro’s boys wrestling team moved closer to cinching the Sierra Foothill League title last week by notching a 59-20 win over Nevada Union’s Miners.
The win by the Golden Eagles allows the Del Oro grapplers to go into this week’s final SFL dual match against Granite Bay needing a win to wrap up the crown.
In last week’s action, moving up a weight class from his normal 106 lbs., Isaac Blackburn got Del Oro on the board by pinning Sawyer Mosel in the 113 lb. Weight class.
With Clay Shropshire out of the lineup with an injury, Jake Vargas filled in against a tough Nevada Union wrestler. He kept it close enough to only give up three-team points as he lost a 6-0 decision at 118.
Next at 126, Jansen Engelbrecht pinned his opponent in the first round. Then at 132, Zach Ruybal went out and also got a first round pin. At 138, Tanner Robison got a second round pin and in the 145-pound match, Dustin Edwards pinned his opponent in the first round.
The next two matches went Nevada Union’s way as Andrew Keefe (152) gave up a tech fall against returning masters champion Johnny Callas. At 160, Patrick Neu had a quick pin called against him.
But Del Oro answered when Brandon Jeppson pinned his opponent in the first round at 170 and was followed by Dylan Kainrath with a first round pin in the 182-pound weight class.
After leading the first two rounds, 195-pounder Russell Pierce was pinned in the third round before  Jon Francom-Clark had to fight off his back early in the first round. Down 5-0, he reversed his opponent to his back for the pin and the win. At heavyweights, Saul Meneses pinned his opponent in the first round for the final count.
