After being delayed two days by the weather, the Sierra Foothill League varsity boys water polo tournament finally hit the water at the Roseville Aquatics Center Thursday, and the favorites rolled. Led by a seven Alex Obert goals, the No. 2-seeded Del Oro squad took care of its business with a 16-3 win over Nevada Union. Tommy McKenzie, J.T. Roe and Collin Johnston each tallied twice for the Golden Eagles, and McKenzie added three assists and four steals. Chris and Josh McCormick scored once a piece and Shane Plummer scored once and also added seven saves after entering the cage as the back-up goalie. Del Oro and Nevada Union are in Bracket B of the tournament, which consists of an initial pool-play round with three 3-team pools leading up to a championship round that reseeds into three pools based on the results of round one. The winner of each pool will enter the championship bracket, with the second-place teams and third- place teams also grouped for the finals. Nevada Union will next face Rocklin Tuesday, and Del Oro will battle the fifth-seeded Thunder Thursday at 8:30 p.m. In other opening night action, No. 1 Granite Bay crushed No. 9 Whitney 26-3 and No. 3 Woodcreek beat No. 7 Roseville 14-3. The Grizzlies will face No. 6 Bear River at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and the Timberwolves meet No. 4 Oakmont in the 6:30 p.m. game that night. Roseville and Oakmont will be in the pool at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
