Del Oro High girls volleyball coach Stu Kageta is hoping to use early season drills and pre-season matches to help form the playing rotations that could help vault the Lady Eagles as a 2012 Sierra Foothill League contender. “We’ll be competitive,” said Kageta, who is starting his 16th season at the reins of the Lady Eagles’ spike program. “We’re just trying to find our right combinations. We have a new core of players who are working themselves in at the varsity level.” Kageta feels that both Granite Bay and Rocklin are the teams to beat in this year’s SFL race, but Del Oro, which went 7-3 in league and 20-11 overall a year ago, could be in the picture. “Our league is so tough in volleyball that you have to show up every game,” said the Del Oro coach. “Nevada Union is another team you can’t count out.” Del Oro will be trying to overcome an early injury bugaboo that saw the Lady Eagles lose the services of versatile senior Brianna Ruiz, who suffered a season-ending knee injury playing in a summer basketball showcase. “Brianna did a lot of things well for us,” said Kageta. “We’ll just have to pick thing up without her.” Top returnees for Del Oro include all-SFL outside hitter Morgan Lees; middle hitter Stephanie Geyer; 5-11 outside hitter Stephanie Solich; and junior setter Amy Heyn. Another key performer Kageta welcomes back is libero Summer Shell. “We’ll see where we’re at,” said Kageta. “It’s a new season and we’re looking forward to it.” Del Oro Volleyball Aug. 27 at Placer 7 p.m. Aug. 28 OAK RIDGE Aug. 30 JV, Frosh at Placer, 5 p.m. Aug. 31-Sept.1 at High Sierra Tournament, Reno Sept. 4 PONDEROSA, 5, 5:50, 6:15 p.m. Sept. 6 at Colfax, 4, 5, 6:15 p.m. Sept. 8 at Oak Ridge Tournament Sept. 11 OAKMONT, 4, 5, 6:15 p.m. Sept. 13 at El Dorado, 4, 5, 6:15 p.m. Sept. 15 Frosh at Carmichael Tournament Sept. 18 at Bella Vista, 4:30, 5:30, 6:45 p.m. Sept. 20 WHITNEY, 5, 5, 6:15 p.m. Sept. 26 WOODCREEK, 5, 5, 6:15 p.m. Sept. 29 DEL ORO JV Tournament Oct. 1 ROCKLIN, 5, 5, 6:15 p.m. Oct. 3 NEVADA UNION, 5, 5, 6:15 p.m. Oct. 6 Frosh at Bear River Tournament Oct. 8 at Granite Bay, 5, 5, 6:15 p.m. Oct. 10 at Roseville, 4, 5, 6:15 p.m. Oct. 17 at Woodcreek, 4, 5, 6:15 p.m. Oct. 22 at Rocklin, 5, 5, 6:15 p.m. Oct. 24 at Nevada Union, 4, 5, 6:15 p.m. Oct. 29 GRANITE BAY, 5, 5, 6:15 p.m. Oct. 30 ROSEVILLE, 5, 5, 6:15 p.m.
