There is a long way to go in this Sierra Foothill League boys basketball race. The first half isn’t even over yet.

But Del Oro High School will take first place just the same.

“Everybody wants to be in first place,” coach Geoff Broyles said Tuesday night following the Golden Eagles’ physical 64-53 victory over visiting Roseville in a battle of the league’s two unbeaten teams. “That we’re there right now is great, but we also know we have a lot of work ahead of us.”

Del Oro (14-7 overall, 4-0 SFL) and the Tigers (12-9, 3-1) made each other work to the fullest. There were 45 total fouls and 53 free throws. Del Oro shot 43 percent from the floor (21 for 49). Roseville shot 39 percent (16 for 41).

The Tigers did a little of everything in the first half in taking a 23-22 lead.
Brandon Butler had two nice gives to a driving Marcus Garcia for buckets. Center Andrew Schmidt had seven of his team-high 14 points and six of his nine rebounds in the first half. Cole Jacobs, Daniel Rios and Latrelle Swayne were aggressive on defense.

Roseville took a 30-24 lead on Schmidt’s three-point play with 6:20 remaining in the third quarter, and that’s where the gears jammed for the Tigers.

Del Oro finished the third period on a 19-5 run to take a 43-35 lead into the final quarter. The Golden Eagles committed one turnover in the third quarter and took 14 shots to Roseville’s seven.

“We played well for 2½ quarters. We just fell apart,” Roseville coach Greg Granucci said. “We stopped doing things together. We just did not make enough plays.”

Austin Soldano scored nine of his 14 points in the third period for the Golden Eagles, and Jordan Broyles scored eight of his game-high 16 points in the second half. Soldano also grabbed seven rebounds, and Rex Hime had a game-high five assists.

Del Oro, 8 for 24 from the floor in the first half, was 13 for 25 in the second half. The Golden Eagles, 4 for 11 from the line in the first half, were 16 for 18 in the second half.

“We got a couple deflections and some turnovers and got some easy ones in transition,” Broyles said. “A couple guys got comfortable offensively and were able to make some plays.”

The first half ends Thursday night with Roseville playing at Woodcreek and Del Oro traveling to Granite Bay.
