Golden Eagles Top Folsom In Baseball Opener Alex Mason, Taylor Thomas, Zach Labar and A.J. Newby all stroked run scoring singles to ignite a 5-run fourth inning rally as Del Oro’s varsity baseball team opened its season with a 10-5 win over Folsom last Friday. Leading just 4-3 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Eagles busted the game open with those consecutive RBI hits. Mason went 3x4 for the Golden Eagles and also notched the mound-win by scattering five hits and fanning nine batters. Keith Heyer picked up the save with three strikeouts in two frames of work. Newby was also 2x3 with three RBIs for the winners, while Thomas added a pair of hits with two RBIs. Trent Holmon, Jake Craythorn and Duston Richards also picked up hits for Del Oro. The Golden Eagles play Placer High at 6 p.m., Friday, Mar. 9, at James Field, in Auburn. Del Oro tracksters show well Del Oro’s track team opened its season last Friday at the Steve March Relays as the Golden Eagles hosted Colfax, Placer and Woodland in events that helped squads iron out some of the early-season kinks. The varsity pole vault pole vault competition saw the Golden Eagle boys team place first. Chris Ormes’ jump of 12-6 led the way, while Keith Allred, John Hodge and Thomas Harari all cleared 11-0 for the Black and Gold. In the girls pole vault, Del Oro was led by freshman Melissa Maneatis, who placed second at 10 feet six inches, and her sister, Jennifer, who was third at 10 feet. Travis DeGlymes showed the way in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet two inches. He also bested the individual field in the triple jump at 39-9. Del Oro’s distance runners showed well as Trevor Stephens stepped off a 10:25.22 to win the 3200 meters. Teammate Sam Baker was a close second in 10:29.65. In a unique co-ed shuttle hurdles race, Del Oro, led by Casey Wheeler and Brie Simmons, clocked a winning time of 44.10 to easily outdistance second place Woodland’s 48.59. Del Oro Soccer Under Lights On Friday Del Oro’s girls soccer team will host Bella Vista Friday evening in a non-league match that will be played under the lights at Golden Eagle Stadium. JV action begis at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7 p.m. Last week, Del Oro and Whitney battled to a 0-0 tie. In the tightly played match, the Lady Eagles out-shot the host Wildcats by a 16-9 margin. Next week the Lady Eagles travel to Oakmont on Thursday, Mar. 15. Varsity action begins at 3:30 p.m., followed by the JV match at 5 p.m.
