The first Sierra Foothill League golf tournament of the season went into the books on Monday at Sierra View Country Club in Roseville. And by the slimmest of margins the SFL event went to Granite Bay. Placing three golfers among the top seven finishers, Granite Bay had enough punch to squeeze past Del Oro, 379-380 for top honors. Woodcreek was third with 383 strokes, followed by Rocklin (397), Nevada Union (402) and Roseville (472). Top golfer for Del Oro was Austin Smotherrman, who shot a one-over-par 72. Also for Del Oro, Canyon Rowe and Jarhann Nargussi both had 76s, and Bobby Mullen a 77. Del Oro will play at Granite Bay today at 3:30 p.m., in a SFL dual match. In other action last week, Woodcreek topped the Golden Eagles 194-208 at Morgan Creek. Smotherman, Mullen and Justin Raskin all shot 41s for Del Oro. The Golden Eagles also defeated Rocklin, 198-206, at Whitney Oaks. Smotherman had a one-under-par 35 for Del Oro, while Raskin came in with a 37. Mason Gem Blanks NU Alex Mason hurled a five-hitter Monday afternoon to help spark the Del Oro baseball team past Nevada Union, 6-0, in a Sierra Foothill League game. Mason fanned eight batters and walked just three in his route-going performance. Del Oro tallied three runs in the first inning to get off to a good start in the win. Aaron Richmond went 2x2 at the plate with a double, while Jake Craythorn and Trevor Sloss also added hits with two runs driven in each. Dalton Hudek also added two hits, while Taylor Thomas, Trent Homan and Therin Heryford all added one hit each. The Miners will return to Del Oro Friday for another SFL game starting at 4 p.m. Spikers Go 3-2 at tourney Boys volleyball Del Oro’s boys volleyball team posted a 3-2 record at the King of the Hill tournament played last weekend in El Dorado. The Golden Eagles posted wins over Union Mine, Rio Americano and El Camino and fell at the hands of Bullard of Fresno, and Grant. In a wild Sierra Foothill League match played last week, Del Oro took a 17-25, 25-19, 19-25, 25-22, 17-15 win over Roseville. Leading the Del Oro charge was Trevor Pistochini with 17 kills. Clint Syftestad added 15 kills for the winners, while Kyle Setterlund chipped in with 11. Del Oro hosts Rocklin tonight at 6 p.m. in another SFL match.
