Del Oro spikers look for a strong finish

With an eye on the playoffs, the Del Oro High volleyball team recorded a program first last Thursday night in Grass Valley. Playing superbly on both sides of the net, the Lady Eagles posted their first-ever win in school history at Nevada Union. The Golden Eagles dispatched the Miners 25-22, 20-25, 25-16, 25-18. Leading the way was Belle Obert, who banged home 20 kills and added 24 digs as Del Oro improved to 4-3 in the Sierra Foothill League and 24-4 overall. Aly Duffin had nine kills, nine blocks and nine digs along with a perfect night at the service line. Bailey Humes dished out 41 assists and served for eight points, including two aces. Megan Hentschke added 13 digs and Tatum Jungsten tossed in eight kills and four blocks for the Eagles. Del Oro will close its regular season tonight at home against Roseville. The Lady Eagles are looking for a strong SFL finish to have a shot at moving up in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section’s Div. II playoffs. In the halfway volleyball power ratings, Del Oro was holding down the No. 8 spot. The top eight teams host first-round games that will be begin Tuesday, Nov. 9. The remaining rounds will be played Nov. 11, Nov. 16 and Nov. 18. In an earlier match last week, the Lady Eagles hung with top-ranked Rocklin but still dropped a tough 25-22, 24-26, 25-19, 26-24 match to the Thunder. “It was a well-played match,” Del Oro coach Stu Kageta said. “But it was tough to lose this one.” The Golden Eagles fell despite 19 kills and nine digs from senior Belle Obert. Aly Duffin added 15 kills and three aces, Megan Hentscke tossed in 18 digs, and Bailey Humes had 39 assists along with two aces. In junior varsity play, Del Oro fell to Rocklin 25-22, 25-21. The Del Oro freshmen lost to Rocklin 25-12, 19-25, 15-13. ~ Staff report
