Roseville High School’s boys basketball team had seen much better nights than Wednesday.

Del Oro ran away with a 76-53 victory to secure the Sierra Foothill League title. The host Tigers (13-13 overall, 4-5 SFL) trailed by five at the break, but the Golden Eagles (18-8, 8-1) scored 24 points in the third quarter to launch themselves to a championship.

“We didn’t play very well,” Roseville coach Greg Granucci said. “I don’t know what else to tell you; we just didn’t play very well.”

Del Oro ran an aggressive, fast-paced offense mixed with slick passes and hard cuts to the basket. Point guard Rex Hime dished out eight assists and Jordan Broyles six to go with 14 points. Overall, the fluent Eagles had 25 assists.

Roseville received a strong performance from center Andrew Schmidt, who nearly posted a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Daniel Rios came off the bench to score 11 points for the Tigers.

“We didn’t practice very well (Tuesday),” Granucci said. “I was hoping that they would be a little more fired up to play (Wednesday), and we just didn’t have it. But you’ve got to give Del Oro a lot of credit; they played well and shot the ball well. They came out to win a league championship and they did.”

Roseville allowed numerous open lay-ups in the first half but managed to stay steady with the Eagles thanks to a 14-13 rebounding advantage. While Del Oro had the size advantage, the Tigers continued to fight and claw in the first half.

That ended in the third quarter, when Del Oro nailed three shots from beyond the arc, including two from Taylor Bergthold, who didn’t play in the first half. Nick Lewis had seven points and three rebounds in the quarter, and the Eagles held the Tigers to one field goal.

Roseville will be host to Woodcreek on Friday in a season finale. Del Oro will be host to Granite Bay.

Del Oro won the JV game 62-34.
