Del Oro netters gain share of league crown
Golden Eagles baseball team gets a big late-season victory
In a match where every point and set proved vital, Del Oro’s Golden Eagles followed strong play from its singles competitors to grab a piece of the Sierra Foothill League tennis title. Hosting undefeated Granite Bay last Thursday, April 30, in Loomis, the Golden Eagles battled hard and true throughout the afternoon and emerged with a thrilling 5-4 win. The win enabled the Loomis netters to tie the Grizzlies for the SFL title, both teams finishing 11-1 in league dual match action. However, by virtue of its more number of sets won in the two teams’ meetings this season, Del Oro was awarded the league’s No. 1 playoff berth and will receive a first-round bye in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II team tournament which begins next week. Del Oro will open tourney play on Wednesday, May 13, in Loomis at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of a first-round match between Ponderosa and Sonora. The semi-final round is set for May 18, with the finals slated May 19. In last week’s win, in a key match, No. 2 player Charlie Wyatt fought back for a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 victory. Also providing punch to Del Oro’s win were Brett Bacharach (6-0, 6-0), Andrew Milton (6-3, 6-3), Brandon Bailey (6-4, 6-3) and Garret Dahlin (6-1, 7-5), all who notched their singles match victories in straight sets. Del Oro’s top singles and doubles players were slated to play this week in the SFL individual championships. The CIF Sac-Joaquin Div. II section individual tournament is set for May 14 and 15 at Johnson Ranch in Roseville.
