Del oro kicks off cross country season

Del Oro’s cross country teams kicked off their 2012 seasons last Thursday as the Golden Eagles hosted 17 schools in a twilight meet, which saw runners compete in six different divisions. Del Oro’s varsity girls team received a first-hand glimpse of what Sierra Foothill League action has in store for them as the Lady Eagles placed second behind SFL rival Granite Bay. The Grizzlies totaled 62 points, while Del Oro was next with 71. Leading Del Oro’s top girl finishers were Amy Heyn (16:13) in 8th place, Megan Gentes in 12th (16:52) and Lizzie Meredith in 14th (16:54). In the boys varsity ranks, Del Oro was paced by Trevor Stephens, who was 12th overall in a time of 13:24. Del Oro’s JV boys team also fared well as they placed second with 61 points, behind winning Jesuit’s 46 total. Roman Schmelzer led Del Oro with a 10th place effort in 15:51; while Drew Fajardo (15:51), Forrest Scholtes-Dowd (16:05) and Austin Smith (16:12) were 13th, 14th and 15th respectively. Del Oro will run in the Nevada Invitational at the University of Nevada, in Reno, on Saturday. Next Wednesday, Del Oro will vie in the first SFL meet of the season at Willow Hills, in Folsom.
