Del Oro High School will host its first annual GESPY awards at 6 p.m., Friday, May 6 inside Bonner Gym. The GESPYs — Golden Eagle Sports Performers of the Year — are an awards banquet to honor the athletic achievements of players, teams and coaches throughout the school year. Participants are nominated by their coaches in a variety of categories. Winners are selected by a panel of judges made up of students, coaches, administrators and community members. This year, Del Oro will honor winners in more than 20 categories. The show will be hosted by Mike Maben. A 1996 graduate of Del Oro High School, Maben returned to Del Oro after attending the University of California, Davis, and became a social science instructor. He is now an assistant coach for the JV football and boys wrestling team. This year, he also created and became the head coach of the Del Oro girls wrestling team. Proceeds from the event will benefit Del Oro athletics and the Steffen Ohland Memorial Scholarship. Steffen Ohland was a member of the 2003-04 JV boys basketball team at Del Oro High School. He was known by his classmates, teachers and coaches as a hard-working, fun-loving and positive person that everyone loved to be around. On Dec. 10, 2003 Steffen was tragically killed trying to defend his mother in a domestic violence dispute. Steffen’s sacrifice inspired his teammates to go undefeated in league that year and win the SFL championship. He will always be remembered to those who knew him as a friend and hero. In 2006, Steffen’s friend Travis Richard established the Steffen Ohland Memorial Scholarship, which is handed out each year to a Del Oro athlete who exemplifies the characteristics of being a good teammate and/or someone who has made personal sacrifices for the betterment of his team. This year’s scholarship winner will be named at the GESPY awards and also recognized at Senior Awards night. Admission is $5. For more visit www.puhsd.k12.ca.us/deloro.
