Del Oro High junior gymnast Ann Stockwell is having a successful year and is already competing at nearly a college level.

Stockwell, a second-year Level 10 gymnast at Miyagi Gymnastics Academy in Auburn, is attracting attention of scouts and has already been approached by four colleges in the western United States.

If you watch college gymnastics, you are usually watching Level 10 competition. Generally, Level 10 gymnasts are on college teams or are very successful high schoolers.

During Stockwell’s spring meet, she has already topped numerous personal bests.

At the Spirit of the Flame meet in San Jose on Feb. 23, she earned a 9.525 on vault, 8.4 on bars, 9.125 on beam and 9.475 on floor. This gave her a solid all-around score of 36.525, far more than the 32 needed to qualify her for the State Championship meet.

At the March 9 Delta Classic meet in Stockton, Stockwell outdid herself, with a 9.6 on vault, 9.3 on bars, 8.875 on beam and 9.35 on floor. She totaled an impressive all-around score of 37.125.

All of these scores were good for first or second in her level and age group.

An all-around score of 32 is required at an invitational meet to qualify for the state championship meet. A score of 34 is needed at state to qualify for the regional championship meet.

The highest scorers at regionals qualify for the national meet. Stockwell has already qualified for the state meet in Livermore on March 23.

If she performs there as she has so far, she will likely go to the regionals in Phoenix on April 13.

Stockwell has high hopes to culminate her meet season at nationals in Minneapolis, Minn., on May 10.
