Del Oro Grapplers Bag SFL crown
Fresh off its cinching of the Sierra Foothill League championship last week, Del Oro’s boys wrestling team for the first time tested the waters of Div. I level post season dual team championship competition.
Wrestling at Lincoln High in Stockton, the Golden Eagles posted a rousing first round 69-6 win over Lodi. However, despite battling gamely, the Golden Eagles fell in the semi-final round to eventual Div. I champion Vacaville, 42-21.
“We wrestled well,” said Del Oro coach Dave Sanchez. “Vacaville is the top team in the section and No. 2 in the state. We won some close matches from them.”
In last week’s SFL cinching 57-15 rout of Granite Bay, Del Oro notched wins in 11 of the fourteen contested bouts.
At 106 pounds, Landon McBride got the Golden Eagles rolling with a 9-4 win. That was followed at 113 pounds by Isaac Blackburn notching a first round pin.
Del Oro continued to roll as Clay Shropshire, at 120 pounds, won by tech fall 16-1 and Jansen Engelbrecht had a 13-0 major decision in the 130 pound weight class.
Other Del Oro winners included Tanner Robison (138 lbs.) who picked up a 17-4 major decision, Dustin Edwards who tallied a first-round pin at 145 and at 152, Johnny Zieour who won by tech fall 16-1.
Patrick Neu kept the Golden Eagles on top as he pinned his opponent in the first round at 160. Del Oro’s other points came from Dylan Kainrath receiving a forfeit at 182 as did Jon Francom-Clark at 220 and Saul Meneses at heavyweight.
Del Oro now turnes its attention to this Saturday’s SFL championship tournament set for Woodcreek. The top finishers there will advance to the Div. I tournament set for Vintage High in Napa. Both tournaments are a prelude to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Master’s Tournament, Feb. 22-23.
