Placing four of its five golfers in the top ten, the Del Oro golf team captured first place honors Monday in the Sierra Foothill League tournament. Playing 18 holes at Timber Creek Golf Club in Roseville, the Golden Eagles scored 383 strokes to easily outdistance the field. Following Del Oro were Rocklin 404, Granite Bay 407, Nevada Union 422, Woodcreek 435 and Roseville 436. The tourney win, the Golden Eagles’ second SFL tourney victory this season, gives the Golden Eagles outright SFL championship. Del Oro now advances to Monday’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Divisional Tournament on Monday at Haggin Oaks in Sacramento. Leading Monday’s tourney win was junior Austin Smotherman who shot a two-under-par 70. “Austin shot lights out,” said Del Oro coach Hal Steinbach. “The kids are all playing very well right now.” Following Smotherman in for Del Oro were Eric Ash with a 74, Robert Sahlit with a 77 and Justin Raskin with a 79. Del Oro’s SFL tourney win comes on the heels of the team capturing first place in a tourney played last weekend at Plumas Pines located near Graeagle. Del Oro totaled 383 to nip Christian Brothers and Granite Bay for top honors. In other recent SFL matches, Del Oro took a big step toward its league crown by taking a 195-199 win over second place standing Granite Bay at Turkey Creek last Thursday. Raskin, a sophomore, led the way by firing a 2-under-par 34. Smotherman and Sahlit both shot 38s while Ash fired a 41 and Canyon Rowe added a 44. Del Oro also defeated Roseville, 198-243 at Turkey Creek with Ash shooting an even-par 36. Raskin fired a 38 and carded a 39. ~ Staff report
