Del Oro golf wins SFL No. 1, match vs. Granite BayBy: Gold Country News Service And Journal sports staff
One of the lowest 18-hole tournament totals that Del Oro High’s golf team has posted in recent years helped propel the Golden Eagles to an impressive victory Monday at the Sierra Foothill League’s No. 1 tournament of the year.
Playing at the par-72 Sierra View Country Club in Roseville, Del Oro placed four of its golfers among the first nine for a 369 total and bested second-place finishing Granite Bay by 14 strokes.
“It’s one of the lowest 18-hole tournament totals I can remember for us,” said Del Oro coach Hal Steinback. “It was a very good effort by the boys.”
Leading Del Oro’s win was Bobby Mullen, who carded a three-under-par 69 for medalist honors. He was followed in by Josh Sedeno, a freshman, with a 72; Justin Raskin, with a 73; Louie Euer, with a 75; Jahann Nargussi, with an 80; and Ryan Takayama, with a non-scoring 86.
Del Oro didn’t have much time to savor its win, as the Golden Eagles hosted Granite Bay Tuesday at Turkey Creek.
Del Oro, however, kept its momentum going and topped Granite Bay 187-189.
“It was a big win for us after that win for us yesterday,” said Steinback, whose team now has a one-point lead on Granite Bay in the second-place race in the Sierra Foothill League.
Euer fired a one-under 35. He was followed by Nargussi (37), Sedeno (38), Raskin (38) and Mullen (39).
After hosting Roseville Thursday, the Golden Eagles will then play at the prestigious CAL Invitational Saturday at Graeagle, near Quincy.
