Del Oro’s girls varsity water polo team continued its fine play last week by handing rival Granite Bay an 11-5 Sierra Foothill League drubbing. The host Lady Eagles received a five-goal effort from Courtney Weddle and a fine all-around team defensive showing that produced 23 steals. The Lady Eagles built a 5-2 lead by halftime over the Grizzlies and then kept the pressure on in the second half. “Anytime you come up with 23 steals in a match, that’s a good team, defensive effort,” said Del Oro coach Lindi Callahan. ‘The girls did a great job.” Also scoring for the winners were Morgan Callahan, Michal Andreatta and Ryllie Haynes, all with two goals apiece. Also outstanding in the win was goalie Katelyn Thompson. Previously, Del Oro raised its SFL mark to 8-0 with a 10-3 thumping of Bear River. Del Oro received four scores from Weddle and two each via Haynes and Callahan. The scoring was rounded out by Andreatta and Jessica Lynch with one goal each. Del Oro travels to Woodcreek next Tuesday then hosts Nevada Union on Oct. 20. ~ Staff report
