The Del Oro girls basketball team tips off their 2011-12 season this weekend when the Lady Eagles head to the Gold Country to vie in the Kiwanis Tournament at Sonora High.
Del Oro coach Mike Takayama will be unveiling his team on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when the Black and Gold tips off against Lodi in the first round.
The Lady Eagles’ other games in the round robin event will be against Bret Harte at 4 p.m., Friday and then against Alameda on Saturday at a time to be determined.
Takayama welcomes back several players who were cogs in last season’s team, which finished 18-11 overall and won the Sierra Foothill League title.
Included in that group are Stephanie Geyer, Natalie Sohn, Mia Maglinte and Lauren Heyn. The Lady Eagles will be without the services of standout Brianna Ruiz, a recent University of Washington commit, who is recovering from knee surgery.
Del Oro will play at St. Francis next Tuesday before vying in the Oakmont Tournament on Dec. 6 to 8.
