Del Oro girls keep rolling

-A +A
With four games left in their Sierra Foothill League season, the Del Oro High girls basketball team appears to be ready to put the cap on another unbeaten league campaign and along the way fine-tune itself for the upcoming CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. In a pair of different challenges last week that saw the Lady Eagles take on Rocklin in a SFL battle and non-league Div. I power Kennedy of Sacramento in a Saturday match-up, the two end results for Del Oro were still the same: another pair of runaway wins. The two victories leaves Del Oro’s girls (6-0) with a two-game cushion over Its nearest SFL competitor Woodcreek (4-2). The Lady Eagles are now owners of a sparkling 19-3 overall record. In Saturday’s game versus Kennedy, the Cougars were outgunned from the start, falling behind 23-4 after the first eight minutes and never recovering thereafter. Madeline Campbell, who was presented her McDonald’s All-American nomination by former Eagles star Emilie Johnson before the game, scored 20 points to spark the victory. Completing a fine all-around afternoon, Campbell also collected eight rebounds and came up with three steals for Del Oro, which led 44-10 at halftime. Belle Obert also played well for the winners. Dominating play on the inside, Obert scored 10 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked six shots. Also aiding in the big triumph were Crystal Sewell who netted 10 points, snared seven rebounds and had three steals, and sophomore Brianna Ruiz who followed with seven points and six rebounds. Like the win over Kennedy, Del Oro’s verdict at Rocklin was basically over by the halftime break as the Lady Eagles burst out to a 41-14 margin by the halftime break before eventually settling on a 66-33 win. The win, which was Del Oro’s 56th straight in SFL play dating back to the 2006 season, was led by Ruiz with 11 points, Campbell scored 10, while Sewell and Alicia Bernauer all added nine apiece. Also turning in strong efforts were Obert who garnered eight rebounds and three blocks and Becky Duncan who came up with six steals to lead the defense. Del Oro will hit the road tonight for a 7 p.m. varsity game at Roseville and then play at Woodcreek next Tuesday, also at 7:00 p.m. ~ Staff report
