Del Oro girls fall short against PresentationBy: Gold Country News Service
SAN JOSE — After trailing by as many as 12 points earlier in the second half, the Del Oro's girls basketball team made a strong late run at host Presentation here Wednesday night but the Lady Eagles couldn't get over the hump when they needed to.
"We came down three times with a chance to take the lead but we came up short," said Del Oro coach Mike Takayama of his team's 55-49 CIF Northern California Div. II Regional first-round setback to No. 7 Presentation. "We had our chances but give credit to Presentation, they held us off."
Del Oro trailed 32-22 at halftime but the Lady Eagles caught fire in the fourth quarter behind Stephanie Geyer (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Lauren Heyn (10 points).
But when it needed to most of the evening, Presentation went to Courtney Danner, a senior point guard who torched the Lady Eagles for 33 points.
"She's a very good player," Takayama said. "We tried some different things to slow her down. Finally our 1-2-2 gave her some trouble."
Presentation will now move on Saturday and play No. 2 Clayton Valley. Del Oro, meanwhile, ends the year with a 19-12 record.
"We had a good season," Takayama said. "We're saying goodbye to some fine seniors but we'll regroup and come back next season."
