After two nights of sub-par shooting from the field, the Del Oro boys basketball team heated things up a bit in the 7th-place game at last week’s Whitney Holiday Classic tournament. Sparked by a big offensive night from center Alan Kidwell, the Golden Eagles outlasted North Valley, of Reno, in a 91-84 shootout. That improved the Black and Gold’s non-league record to 8-6. Del Oro will complete its pre-season schedule with an away game at Folsom on Saturday. It will be a tripleheader with game time for the frosh at 4:30 p.m., the JVs follow at 6 p.m. and the varsity contest tipping off at 7:30 p.m. The Golden eagles then open Sierra Foothill League play on Thursday, Jan. 12, when they host Rocklin. In the tournament win over North Valley, Kidwell erupted for a much-needed 30 points as Del Oro led only led 45-42 at the half, before putting a little more breathing room between them in the second half. Austin Soldano and Jordan Broyles followed Kidwell’s big points explosion with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Blake Covey and Kyle Setterlund added six points each, and Nick Lewis chipped in with five. In their tournament opener, Del Oro managed just 17 second-half points in a 44-38 loss to Hoover, of Fresno. The Golden Eagles had trailed the Central Section foe 26-21 at halftime, but cold shooting from the floor led to the second half offensive woes. Broyles’ 11 points and nine by Kidwell led Del Oro. Soldano, Trevor Pitching and Danny Becker all scored four points apiece. Del Oro tried to get untracked Thursday in the consolation round against California High, of San Ramon, but ended up being closed-out, 53-50. Kidwell’s 12 points, 10 by Broyles and eight from Pitching topped Del Oro’s attack.
