Bishop Gorman storms back from early deficit to knock off Eagles
The Del Oro High football team held its own early on Saturday night in Las Vegas. But over the final three quarters, the massive Bishop Gorman squad overpowered the Golden Eagles on its way to a 38-13 victory. Del Oro fell in its season opener against the nationally ranked Gaels as both teams displayed impressive rushing attacks. But Shaquille Powell stole the show. Behind an offensive line that boasted five players over 250 pounds, the Bishop Gorman junior rushed for 251 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. Del Oro senior Kenny Andri ran for 117 yards and two touchdowns in his debut at tailback. Andri’s 2-yard TD run late in the first quarter gave the Eagles a 13-10 lead, but the Gaels stormed back with four unanswered touchdowns. Powell put the game away in the third quarter. He had a 67-yard TD run and after a quick 3-and-out by Del Oro, Powell raced 44 yards for another TD as the home team pulled away. Del Oro got a big play early from Tyler Adair, who blocked a field goal attempt by Gorman. Nick O’Sullivan picked the ball up and returned it to the Gaels’ 29-yard-line to set up an Eagle touchdown. On a windy night in Las Vegas, quarterback Max Magleby finished 6-of-12 passing for 60 yards. Daniel Thomas had three catches for 47 yards. Del Oro hurt its cause with two fumbles on the night. Del Oro junior Zach Heath was injured in the third quarter and did not return, leaving the Eagles without one of their top linemen. Del Oro will return to Loomis today. The Eagles will host the “Battle at the Capital” on Friday and Saturday, playing the final game Saturday against Bullard of Fresno.
