The Del Oro High girls basketball team dialed up the defense to turn away Oakmont Thursday night in Loomis. The Golden Eagles stayed perfect in the Sierra Foothill League with a 56-29 victory. Del Oro allowed just three points in the second quarter to pull away. Crystal Sewell sparked the Eagles with eight points, six rebounds and five steals off the bench. Courtney Nolen scored 10 points while Madeline Campbell and Katie Pulliam added nine apiece. Del Oro (18-1 overall, 8-0 SFL) will host Roseville on Tuesday. In junior varsity action, Del Oro beat Oakmont 43-26. The Eagle freshmen beat Oakmont 56-12. Placer 69, Mesa Verde 35 — The Lady Hillmen exploded for 58 points in the first half to rebound nicely from a loss at Bear River on Tuesday. Junior Kayla Reeves and senior Shelby Madigan scored 16 points apiece as Placer improved to 7-13 overall and 5-3 in the Pioneer Valley League. “We had a very good practice yesterday and we came out and passed the ball well and played with great intensity,” Placer coach Scott Barry said. Senior Bailey Bill had a big night with 15 points and Audrey Furlong tossed in six. Placer, which is No. 19 in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III power ratings, will host Whitney on Tuesday. Golden Sierra 40, San Juan 34 at Citrus Heights — The Grizzlies stormed back from a 22-13 halftime deficit to bolster their playoff chances. Golden Sierra (11-11 overall, 7-1 Golden Empire League) got 15 points from Shannon Cummings. Sammie Oswald finished with seven points, including 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch to help seal the win. Golden Sierra’s junior varsity beat San Juan and the Grizzly freshmen topped Placer Thursday.
