Three tight, non-league games have helped prime the Del Oro High boys basketball team for the start this week of Sierra Foothill League play. In a busy week of non-league action, the Golden Eagles posted close wins over Monterey Trail, 45-39, and Lincoln, 55-54, before dropping a close 57-53 game to Folsom. The results give Del Oro a 10-6 overall, non-league mark heading into tonight’s SFL opener at home against Rocklin. Action tips off at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles will also stay busy this weekend, as Saturday the Black and Gold take on Oak Ridge at 7 p.m., at the Common Good Classic, at Antelope High School. The Del Oro girls will play Oak Ridge at Antelope starting at 5 p.m. In last week’s win over Monterey Trail, the Golden Eagles limited the Elk Grove school to just 15 second-half points in taking the tenacious defensive struggle. Del Oro, which trailed 24-20 at the halftime break, picked things up offensively in the second half behind Austin Soldano’s 10 points, eight apiece from Jordan Broyles and Alan Kidwell, seven from Nick Lewis and five each by Trevor Pistochini and Sam Pontillo. A steady attack by Del Oro helped the Golden Eagles get past visiting Lincoln. Soldano, quickly rounding into shape after Del Oro’s lengthy football season, found the range for 19 points, while Broyles was right behind with 15. Blake Covey, another late arriving footballer, and Kidwell both chipped in with seven points each. On Saturday, Del Oro matched up with Div. I power Folsom and for three quarters coach Geoff Broyles’ hoop-men were right where they wanted to be with a 38-35 lead heading into the final eight minutes. But a fourth quarter surge by the host Bulldogs was enough to turn the tide the ‘Dogs way in the narrow four point contest. Kidwell led Del Oro’s upset bid with 14 points, while Broyles netted 14 and Taylor Bergthold, back from injury, scored eight. Del Oro will travel to Woodcreek on Tuesday for its second SFL game also tipping off at 7 p.m. ~ Staff report
