A total of 10 different Del Oro boys basketball players found the scoring column Saturday evening as the Golden Eagles defeated Lathrop of Manteca, 65-59, to salvage the third-place trophy in the Thunder Holiday Tournament hosted by Rocklin High. Del Oro trailed 13-9 after a quarter before trimming the margin to 31-29 by halftime. In the second half, the Golden Eagles seized control of the game by outscoring their foes, 36-28. Jordan Broyles sank 18 points to pace the Golden Eagles. He was followed in the scoring column by Kyle Russell with 10 points, Austin Soldano with eight and Taylor Bergthold and Quincy Shelby with six points each. In the semi-final round, Del Oro hung with Sierra Foothill League rival Woodcreek before faltering in the fourth quarter and eventually falling, 65-43. Woodcreek’s fast breaking tandem of point guard Devin Murphy and forward John Peska acted like a quarterback-receiver tandem with Murphy thrusting deep outlets to a wide-open Peska for lay-ups that resulted in the T-Wolves outscoring DO, 21-7, over the final eight minutes. Peska scored a game-high 17 points. The Eagles had their worst scoring quarter, going 0 for 4 from the free throw line and making just two field goals. Woodcreek led 26-22 at halftime after both teams played solid man defense. Murphy had just three of his 10 assists in the first half, and Del Oro recorded four steals. Tyler Milani roamed the court for four rebounds, two assists and a steal to key the Timberwolves. Del Oro post player Kyle Russel scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds for Del Oro. Quincy Shelby and Jordan Broyles each scored seven points for the Eagles. In the opening round, Del Oro rolled up a big 32-point first quarter and never looked back in running past Inderkum, 83-46. Soldano’s 15 points, 10 from Luis Parache and nine from Bergthold led the way. ~ Staff report
