It’s not just the Del Oro High football program that is taking on challenges at the highest caliber of state level athletic competition. This week the Golden Eagles boys basketball squad, off to a 6-1 start to its season, steps up a notch in competition as the Golden Eagles vie in the 20-team National Prep Classic hosted at St. Joseph’s High School and Hancock Junior College, in Santa Maria. The Golden Eagles will compete in the National Division of the tournament. Included in the bracket are state powers such as Fremont of Oakland, Hawthorne, Buchanan of Clovis, Marin Catholic and Sheldon of Sacramento. Del Oro had the unenviable task of drawing perennial state Div. I powerhouse Westchester of Los Angeles in its 6 p.m. opener on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles are bracketed with St. Bernard’s of Playa del Rey and Marin Catholic. Next week, Del Oro will play in the Whitney Christmas Classic, a new tournament which replaces the Kendall Arnett at Placer on the Black and Gold schedule. Del Oro will open play on Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 5 p.m., against Hoover from Fresno. In last week’s action, the Golden Eagles took a pair of non-league wins over Whitney and Vista del Lago. On Friday, at Whitney, the Golden Eagles and Wildcats hooked up in a low-scoring affair that Del Oro took, 44-29, after limiting the hosts to just 13 second-half points. In a tight defensive struggle, Del Oro and Whitney went into the halftime break knotted at 16 each. The Golden Eagles were then able to open up some breathing room in the third quarter when they held Whitney to just four points. Playing without leading scorer Jordan Broyles, who suffered a first quarter injury, and starting forward Taylor Bergthold, Nick Lewis more than picked up the offensive slack by tanking 23 points. Also scoring for the winners were Trevor Pistochini with seven points, Alan Kidwell with four, Rex Hime and Daniel Becker with three each, and Taylor Butterfield and Kyle Setterlund with two apiece. On Friday, at Vista del Lago, in Folsom, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 28-15 lead by halftime and never let the hosts back into the game on the way to a 61-47 triumph. A balanced look on offense by the Golden Eagles was led by Broyles, with 18 points; Kidwell, with 16; and Hime, with 10. Rounding out the Del Oro victory were Lewis’ six points, five by Becker and two apiece from Pistochini, Butterfield and Setterlund. ~ Staff report
