The Del Oro High volleyball team came up just short in its quest to earn a rematch with Sierra Foothill League rival Rocklin in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II final.
El Camino spoiled the rematch by beating the Golden Eagles 23-25, 25-23, 13-25, 25-21, 15-10 Tuesday night in Sacramento.
The seventh-seeded Golden Eagles had a prime opportunity in Game 2, but could not finish off the home team.
“We had a seven-point lead and just couldn’t put them away,” Del Oro coach Stu Kageta said. “We lost our aggressiveness. Maybe we were looking ahead a little bit. They crawled back into it and got the momentum back.”
Senior Belle Obert capped her Del Oro career with a gem, finishing with 24 kills, 27 digs, two blocks and a 16-for-18 performance from the service line.
Senior Bailey Humes dished out 39 assists, served 12 points with four aces and added 10 digs. Senior Aly Duffin added seven kills, 13 points served and two aces.
Senior Vicky Warner contributed 10 digs as the Golden Eagles finished 27-6 on the season. Del Oro set a school record for wins in a season.
El Camino will face top-seeded Rocklin on Thursday in the championship match at 8 p.m. at UC Davis.
Bear River 3, Ripon 0 at Ripon — The Bruins fell victim to the top-seeded Indians in the Division IV semifinals as their run of upsets came to an end.
Bear River lost 25-20, 25-15-25-15. The 13th-seeded Bruins had beaten No. 4 West Campus and No. 5 Capital Christian on their way to the semifinals.
Bear River finished the season 29-14 overall.
“It was definitely a good year for us,” Bear River coach Matt McDonald said. “We set some goals and we wanted to get to the next level and we were able to win two playoff games. We’re losing two seniors, but we have five starters coming back and we’re excited to get started for next year.”
Sara Schell and Katie Tomkievicz had six kills and two aces each for the Bruins. Kaya Johnson dished out 21 assists.
Ripon will face Golden Sierra in the Division IV final Thursday at UC Davis. The Grizzlies beat Escalon in four games Tuesday in Garden Valley.
