A large contingent of Black and Gold will be headed down Interstate 80 this Friday and Saturday to attend the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I-AA wrestling tournament at Vintage High in Napa.
Just like they dominated the regular season in the Sierra Foothill League, the Del Oro Golden Eagles flexed their muscles at last week’s SFL Tournament held at Woodcreek.
Crowning eight individual champions and having five more wrestlers finish in the top three of their respective weight classes, Del Oro will advance 14 total wrestlers to this week’s section event.
“We qualified the entire team to the divisionals next week,” said Del Oro coach Dave Sanchez. “We had eight champions, which fell short of our record of nine that we had in 1998. The whole team really stepped it up this weekend.”
For the record, the Golden Eagles gained gold medals from the following weight classes:
• 106-Isaac Blackburn
• 113-Clay Shropshire
• 120-Zach Ruybal
• 132-Tanner Robison
• 145-Johnny Zieour
• 160-Patrick Neu
• 170-Dylan Kainrath
• 220-Jon Francom-Clark
In addition, Jansen Engelbrecht was second at 126 pounds while Dustin Edwards garnered second at 138.
Grabbing third places were Andrew Keefe at 152 pounds, Brandon Jeppson in the 182-pound weight class and Saul Meneses at 285. In fourth place was Russell Pierce at 195 pounds.
Ruybal topped Del Oro’s efforts by being named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.
The top finishers from this weekend’s tournament in Napa will then advance to the CIF Master’s Tournament Feb. 22 to 23 in Stockton at the Stockton Arena.
