CARMICHAEL — Del Campo High mounted an aggressive attack on Del Oro Wednesday night, defeating the Golden Eagles 71-58 in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoff game. The No. 4 seeded Cougars (20-7) took the lead early in the first quarter, while No. 12 Del Oro (18-9) rallied to get out from under their thumbs. Del Oro senior Kyle Russell led the surge against Del Campo in his last game as a Golden Eagle, scoring 17 points. In the first half he put on a show for the spirited crowd with two-consecutive slam dunks. Golden Eagle junior Alan Kidwell assaulted the Cougars with 15 more points, while senior Jordan Broyles contributed 10 points. By halftime the Golden Eagles only trailed by five points as the score reached 33-27. The Cougars picked up the pace in the second half. Senior Davit Saghatelyan was the leading scorer for Del Campo with 17 points. Senior Alex Powell had seven assists as the Cougars beat the Eagles for the second time this season. “It was a great season,” said Del Oro Coach Geoff Broyles. “We played hard, but they made some more points.” Junior Nick Lewis said he was disappointed in the outcome of the game. “(Del Campo) played their A game and we weren’t able to bring it,” Lewis said. “We did really come together as a team though this year after losing our best player .” While a Division II title is no longer in reach for Del Oro this year Broyles said his juniors have gained valuable experience that will hopefully pay off next year. “The seniors led by example,” Broyles said. “They did everything that was asked of them. We lost but the experience will benefit us next year.” Reach Sara Seyydin at
