A Loomis planning commission workshop at the site of a proposed 115-cell convent will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 2, at 5820 Barton Road. The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist have proposed to build the Regina Caeli Priory, a 134,000-square-foot, mission-style convent on 40 acres. The Roman Catholic sisters, who wear traditional habits, have been featured twice on the Oprah Winfrey television show. The parcel is located on the corner of Rocklin and Brace Roads. The residential agricultural zoning allows an organizational facility, such as a monastery, by conditional use permit. The anticipated height of the convent is 34 feet. A 55-foot bell tower has also been proposed. The driveway entrance to the monastery is proposed to be located off Barton Road. A conditional use permit, design review, variance for the height of the bell tower, a parking waiver to reduce the amount of parking required, and environmental review have been requested. For the workshop, the applicant will be staking the boundaries of the proposed monastery, sports fields and the driveway entrance. Workshop attendees will enter at the gate on Barton Road.
